Inside Out

Inside Out was commissioned by Arttextiles3, a quadrennial event and exhibition that explores current contemporary textile practice. The piece is sited at Priory School, Bury St Edmunds.

The work primarily deals with the nature of objects – in this case it is the objects commonly found within schools. During workshops with school children, a collection of frottage images relating to their everyday life and daily routines within the school were brought together to form the basic structure of the composition.

With work normally gallery based the commission at Priory School offered the opportunity not only to take the work outside but to also explore new technologies.

The front of the school’s building and in particular the laundry tower was the perfect catalyst for this piece of work. Standing on high ground the school overlooks the historic city centre with its many chimneys and towers, including the new millennium cathedral tower.

Wanting to visually mimic the architectural features of the famous landmark, Norman Tower, and its surrounding walled remains of a former priory, the commissioned work developed to reflect this iconic piece of architecture comprising different levels of decoratively carved stonework. From a distance the images on the final art textile work appear as architectural detailing but when viewed up close the mundane identity of the objects become recognisable.

‘Sue Brinkhurst spent some time in the school finding interesting and meaningful objects that pupils regularly use, ranging from kitchen utensils and maths equipment to musical instruments. Every pupil made a rubbing of their choice and they were fascinated with the process of making rubbings onto fabric. We worked in the hall so everyone could see what was produced’
